Hello Everyone,

Seisia IKC had a ball on the ending of our Holiday program with Kids living Safer lives coming in with an recycled craft activities and also face painting with the Doyle Family at the Seisia Supermarket. The Doyle Family is assisting the Seisia IKC in a proposal to the Seisia Enterprise to sponsor Ukalalies for the kids for their music time. The kids enjoyed it very much and to end it with a movie shown in the conference room.

This is a Celebration held on New years night, the last night of our successful Rally hosted by Hope Fellowship, from 27th December, 2011 - 1st January 2012 at the Seisia community hall.
We had visiting ministry from Daru, Port Moresby and also Pastor Robyn Green and Pastor Anthony Beasley from Sunshine Coast.

Such a Glory and honour to see miracles happen with healing, castaway of demons, worshipping and praising, and workshops on the vision of 2012 and onwards.

Most of us Seisia community members who attended have all joined in with the Daru ministry team dancing to the Lord. How awesome this is!

HACC Seniors First Visit to Seisia IKC.

Last Year December in the last few Weeks before our closure for Christmas, the HACC team with their Seniors came down to the Seisia IKC for a workshop on Alzeimer Disease. It was very interesting for the elderlys and also for the Community members also who participated in the Workshop. The Seniors Day with the HACC Program is locked in for one Tuesday of every month beginning as of February. Am so happy that the seniors are now utilising the Library and will be coming down to do some computer awareness studies.

Photo Competition

Green Cross Australia in partnership with the State Library of Queensland is holding a competition to find the best photo of the King Tide happening in your Community between 19 – 21 January 2012.

Not only could you win an Apple iPod Touch, you will also contribute to the recording of history in your local area. Having this visual collection of images could help us be better prepared for a future where sea levels are higher than what they are today.

We are encouraging you to partner with a Land and Sea Ranger in your Community and if your entry is chosen you will both win an Apple iPod Touch. If you are working alone and your photo wins you will only receive one Apple iPod Touch and we will have two winners across the IKC network.

Work out when to go?

The best time to take photos is at the peak of the tide when the water level is at its highest. This time varies both along the Queensland coast and within the estuaries away from the coast. Check your local tidal times near you. http://tides.willyweather.com.au/qld.html

What shots to take?

Capture photos of local coastal areas that are subject to flooding or erosion. Take images where the impact of the tide can be gauged against familiar landmarks like buildings, jetties, bridges, roads, sea walls, shorelines, beach infrastructure or estuary shorelines.

If you can, take 'before and after' shots which will help to show the average water level in the same location.

Be safe

Use good judgement when you are taking your photos. Stay away from dangerous situations particularly in stormy conditions and avoid taking risks.

Once you have taken your photos, please upload 3 photos including a before and after shot and either post to the IKC Blog or email them to Natasha.hirakawa@slq.qld.gov.au

Your photos will then be sent to Green Cross Australia for judging and the winners will be announced.

This is a fully supported program, funded bythe federal government's Department of Families, Housing, Community Servicesand Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA), which sends young IndigenousAustralians on a 7 week leadership and community development project inVanuatu.

TheIYLP is a unique and exciting opportunity for young Indigenous Australians (21– 30 years) to enhance their leadership and vocational skills through personaldevelopment, community development, work experience, education, and by buildingcross cultural awareness and understanding.

NPA - RIPIA Training with Ren & Tyler

Good News story of the week

From the 31st October -7th November Renee Colless (SLQ Project Officer) and Tyler Wellensiek (NPA RIPIA Project Officer) travelled to the Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) to facilitate Free Computer training with Sandra Woosup (Injinoo IKC) and Mabelene Gebadi (Seisia IKC).

Over 5o community members attended during the week in both Injinoo and Seisia to receive on the spot computer training in applications such as Gmail, Facebook, Downloading music and movie clips from YouTube onto disk etc. Kids who participated were able to take photos of significant sites in the community and download into power point presentations for all in the IKC to see. A number of literacy and learn to type games were played using the computers – and the race was on whom could type the quickest…

In addition to the computer training there were 3 movie nights conducted at each of the IKC sites. New Mapoon entertained over 6o families, Seisia and Injinoo over 3o families. It is anticipated the sales of popcorn and drinks raised at each of the sites will go towards funding the next movie night during the upcoming summer holidays.

New Mapoon will also be the first site in the NPA to distribute the sale of USBs, CDs, DVDs and Cases. The sale of the items will restock the items and further include additional items such as Camera SD Cards, Headphones, Speakers, Lanyards and USBs with Phone Memory Cards.

It was a great week overall and some excellent outcomes obtained. A very big thank you to Russell Symons (NPARC) and the IKC Coordinators for their valued effort in ensuring everything went according to plan.

NPA - Injinoo Aurora & Networking

From the 10-14th October Renee Colless (SLQ Project Officer) travelled to the Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) to facilitate implementation of the Aurora LMS with Sandra Woosup from the Injinoo IKC. By the end of the day, Sandra had signed up 13 new members to the IKC and was thinking strategically on how to engage more new members to come in and sign up.

During the week Renee also visited New Mapoon, Seisia and Umagico IKCs in addition to the NPARC Councils in each community and key stakeholders such as NPA Family & Community Services, local Health Clinics, PCYC, ATODS, HACC and VPG. Renee worked closely with Russell (Director for Community Services) at NPARC to gage where each of the IKCs was at and how to improve service delivery to meet community needs. The support from Russell and NPARC was overwhelming and IKCs are very much on their agenda.

It is expected that the new IKC development site for Bamaga may take a little longer to establish than anticipated – however Umagico IKC will definitely be opened in January 2012. Training with the new IKC Coordinator Lorraine Solomon is ongoing as we take her on the IKC journey.

It was a great week overall and some excellent outcomes with the new IKC establishment for Umagico developing slowly for the NPA, Aurora is now installed in all 3 IKCs and we can expect RIPIA training to New Mapoon next week in addition to the ABC scheduling a trip to the NPA to showcase good news stories in New Mapoon and Seisia during my next scheduled trip in November.

On Tuesday 13th September, I had a visit from Bethel Hobson, our local community member who works in Child Protection area who has done a small promotion talk about child protection and followed by a sausage sizzle, because last week was Child Protection Week 5-9 Sept, 2011. She asked the kids questions if they knew what Child protection was all about and then explained to the kids as well. It was interesting for them to know all these things and also enjoyed their afternoon with the sausage sizzle and some activities to do.

Just thought i'd update my page by reminding everyone of us of the wonderful time, I certainly had with all of you guys during our recent training in Brisbane. I really had a great time exploring new ideas on how we can work together to make our IKC's a much more learning places for our people. For me the overall training received was very professional and I look forward to putting it ito practice.

On a personal note, I've mentioned to some you guys that i'm trying for a different career at the start of next year, so i just want to say that i'll really miss you guys, you've been a great support to me, more like a family really but it's not the end of the world so where ever life will take me i'll always think of you guys.

We had computer at Badu IKC and lots of people were willing to learn new things. We practiced internet searching, finding videos of Badu Island on YouTube and how to send email. We took photos of the island so we could put them onto the blog and on Google Earth.

Exciting Mid Week at Seisia IKC Holiday Program

Hello Everyone,

The Seisia IKC had alot of fun activies and community events happening from Last Wednesday 6th July. I hosted the State of Origin match 3 which was held here at the Seisia RTC Verandah on an outdoor big screen. The Seisia Health Centre also promoted Condoman and STI's awareness talk to the community Youths on the breaktime of the origin match.

On Thursday, Kids Living Safer Lives/AFL & Doyle Family all entertained the kids with such Fantastic Facepainting, dressing in costumes, singing, learning kids to play ukaleili and also other outdoor fun activities such as juggling, balloon making different shapes of even animals etc., and to end the day they all had a pool fun activity. On Friday, the Seisia Health had a Kids Well Person Health Check with a Sausage Sizzle to start off and fun activities with prizes etc. On Friday night to end the Holiday program we had a Movie Night which started at 4.30pm to 10pm. All enjoyed their Holiday program.

Woorabinda Knowledge Centre Visit

FROM THE FIELD:

Last week Leonie Berwick (Operations Manager – Cannon Hill), Gavin Bannerman (A/Manager, Original Materials) and I travelled to Woorabinda Knowledge Centre. Our mission was to weed old resources from the existing school collection, set up and train staff on the new Aurora Library Management System (LMS), engage community with historic photos from Woorabinda and surrounding areas and build relationships with our partners, those being Woorabinda State School and Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council.

After a short assessment of how we were going to tackle the big job ahead, Leonie was straight into getting the collection in order. She began moving the books around so they were in the right areas and then begun sifting through the school old resources to find the gems. By the end of the week, Leonie had thinned out the collection and the books on the shelves were looking great!

Gavin brought up with him a selection of unidentified photographs which were taken around the Woorabinda area in the 1970’s. This was a great community engagement tool as local people were able to see what Woorabinda looked like back then and how the people lived. Viewing the images generated interesting discussions as some people commented on the type of clothing they wore and others were looking for familiar faces and land marks. It was from this initial engagement at the school with the community that lead us to taking the images to the Woorabinda Aged Care. In the first five minutes that were there, an elderly man from Woorabinda had identified his old Sunday school teacher. What a rewarding outcome to have achieved during our visit!

We met with our joint-use facility partners and started negotiations on the MOU. I find this aspect of our trip to be rewarding as it allows for good relationships to be brokered and each partner is given the opportunity to identify what they are bringing to the table and how we can all work together to achieve our shared vision.

The installation and training of the Aurora LMS proved to be quite difficult due to technical problems with the proxy server and user accounts (not really sure what this means but I trust the advice of the technicians). In the near future it is hoped that an additional trip will be made to Woorabinda to get the LMS installed and to provide onsite training with community and school members.

Finally a really big thank you to Leonie and Gavin for all your support and help during the week! It was really nice to have some good company while out in the field. See pictures below.

I have a very busy week in the library. Rose from State Library visting me on Monday to do the aurora training .We both were very busy during the week and also doing book exchange.Books are not belong to library which we donated to our community members. Hammond IKC Book Exchange/Aurora Training

On the 3rd of May Rose and Natasha arrived at the Hammond IKC to help with the book exchange and the Aurora Training.

The day they came to the IKC on Hammond Island, we thought the boxes of books haven't arrived yet. We went up to the Council Office to pick up the four new computers that arrived the week before the books arrived. We found the boxes of books outside the Council Office, still on a pallet, wrapped in plastic. The day was saved!!! Saved alot of running around and making phone calls. I couldn't imagine myself putting all the books onto the shelvesall on my own!

We took everything to the IKC and Tash started on the unpacking of the books and moving everything around, while Rose hooked up the computers and showing me how to use Aurora.

Free Computer Training and State Of Origin Match 1 at Seisia IKC

Next Week is a very exciting week for my community of Seisia because the State Library Staff will be visiting the NPA for whole week of free Computer Training and also on Wednesday Night the Seisia IKC will be hosting the State Of Origin Match 1, and lastly Movie night on Friday night to end the week.

I am so looking forward for these upcoming events happening from 23-27 May, here at the Seisia.

NPA Training on Boigu Island

In March this year, James Collins (Senior Project Officer – Keeping Culture Strong) and I travelled to Boigu Island to facilitate National Partnership Agreement (NPA) Computer Training at the Boigu Indigenous Knowledge Centre (IKC). The training focused on internet banking, setting up email accounts, using digital cameras, using Microsoft programs and online shopping. During our visit we worked alongside the Boigu community and staff from the Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC).

One of the highlights of our visit was when we assisted the TSIRC Rangers to create excel spreadsheets, tables and graphs. The Rangers collected data on the number and sex of Dugongs caught but wanted to put it into excel format for their reporting requirements. After a few practice runs with Excel spreadsheets, the Rangers were a lot more confident with using Excel and they created several months’ worth of tables and graphs. I found this activity very rewarding as the Rangers were able to apply the excel training to their everyday work practice.

Another activity I really enjoyed was creating wedding invitations for a joint island wedding. A couple of the ladies from the community brought in some lovely photos of four couples that were to be wed. I sat down with them and we played around with different invitation templates off Microsoft Publisher. When they were happy with the final product we printed the invitations and they looked absolutely fabulous. Congratulations to you all on your engagements and best wishes for the future.

Finally a big thank you to Tanaio Anau the Boigu IKC Coordinator. This event would not have been as successful if it wasn’t for your commitment to promoting the NPA training and assisting Boigu community members to access Information and Communication Technologies.

Hi IKC Network Members

In late April, Rose Warsow (Acting Manager IKC Support and Development) and I travelled to Poruma and Badu to train the IKC Coordinators in the new Aurora Library Management System (LMS).

Aurora… who’s that?? Let me explain…

Aurora LMS is the latest technology to allow libraries to maximize their collections to meet the needs of their communities. The Aurora package provides a range of services including inter-IKC loans, access to SLQ online resources and a live membership database just to name a few of the great features!

In Poruma we met with Thamey Pearson the IKC Coordinator. Thamey was very keen to learn and the Aurora training went really well. She proved to be very confident in using Aurora to sign up new members, loan out resources, returning items and searching online catalogues through the State Library. Thamey is now also using Skype to make video and voice calls – give her a buzz online and say hi!

In Badu we met with the IKC Coordinator, Jane Ahmat. The IKC in Badu has just moved to a bigger space next door to the old IKC. The new area is a good size and Jane has done a great job and making the new space welcoming and user-friendly. While in Badu we completed the training with Jane which went really well and also completed a full stocktake of all the IKC resources. The data from the stocktake will be sent to Cannon Hill for cross-checking with their data and this will hopefully make our book exchanges a lot more efficient. Delivering this training has been a huge learning curve for both communities and our office as we begin to fine tune Aurora to meet the needs of our communities.

Finally a big thank you to Tyler Wellensiek our IT Help Desk Project Officer in Cairns for providing online support and training through Skype – it was very helpful and I am sure over time the IKC’s will benefit greatly from your work.

Official opening of the Woorabinda Knowledge Centre

On the 31st of March 2011, State Librarian Lea Giles-Peters announced the opening of the 21st Indigenous Knowledge Centre in the central Queensland Aboriginal community of Woorabinda.

The Woorabinda Knowledge Centre is housed within the Woorabinda State School library, the joint-use facility represents a significant partnership between Education Queensland, Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council and State Library of Queensland.

In the lead up the opening staff from the Cairns office travelled down to set up the book shelves, install computers, and get the centre ready for the big day. Below are some pictures of Worrabinda Knowledge Centre and the opening ceremony.

Call Us With Skype

As more and more IKCs are learning to use the Aurora Library System, I am getting the chance to video chat with more of you through Skype and I am loving it! Last week I got to chat with Jane at Badu and Thamey at Poruma, quite lovely ladies indeed! The week before, I got the chance to video chat with Mabelene, Pauline and Sandra from the NPA and it has been great getting messages from them whenever they have questions about Aurora, about their computers, or anything else.

Skype is a great way for all the IKC coodinators to connect with us at the office in Cairns, and I hope that there is much more Skyping to come. If you haven't added us yet, our Skype name is cairns.ils. Anytime you want to ask a question, just Skype it to us or give us a call through your computer and we'll have a chat!

Hi everyone! Last week I travelled up to the beautiful NPA to visit the lovely ladies at the IKC's in Seisia, New Mapoon and Injinoo. Over the four days we worked together to implement Aurora at New Mapoon for Pauline and at Seisia for Mabelene. The ladies quickly became experts in signing up new members, adding books that had no barcodes to the system, reserving books, loaning out and returning books. It was great for Sandra from Injinoo to spend some time with the other IKC coordinators in the area. We visited the Injinoo IKC to check out how we can support Sandra and the Injinoo community during our next visit at the end of May. Sandra showed us some very special parts of Injinoo and it was so great listening to all her cultural and historical knowledge. When we were at Injinoo Sandra arranged for us to have our photo taken for the NPA News! On the Thursday Pauline arranged for us to be interviewed at the local radio station. The threee IKC coordinators spoke about the new Aurora system and how community members can sign up, the activities happening at the IKC's, and the upcoming improvements happening at Injinoo. The most important message that the IKC coordinators focused on was that the IKC's are community owned and they encouraged community members to come and get involved in activities or reading as well as feeling free to make suggestions on how they can improve these important community services. It was so wonderful working with these amazing ladies. They were so busy with Aurora and catching up with eachother that they didn't have time to take photos for the blog - so I'm doing this post on behalf of them all. Well done girls!! Two weeks ago I started Movie night and it came out very successful, all the community kids attended and they are all looking forward to our second Movie night which will be held this Friday 1st April and will commence at 4.30pm sharp. Popcorns, Drinks and chips are also on sale and the kids had such ball at the first Movie night.

We have (3) movies which are : Alvin & Chipmunks (The Squekquel), Most Xtreme Primate(King of the slopes) & Saving God. These movies have been advertised in the community and all are looking forward to having a good evening this Friday.

Hope you are all going well and have had a great start to the year!

SPAM…. What does this word mean to you? Bully Beef..? Hamper…? Monty Python….?

Well, the SPAM I am talking about is Internet SPAM. SPAM is the delivery of advertising via any electronic means, most usually EMAIL. We all know about the emails from strange email addresses asking us if we want to buy CHEAP NIKE SHOES, or CHEAP MEDICATION and other even more unsavory offers..

With most of you now having ready access to the internet and emails in your IKCs, the issue of SPAM will become more and more important. To new and inexperienced computer users, SPAM can be DANGEROUS. SPAM can often trap these people into giving their personal details to the unknown people and companies that send the SPAM.

So, I would like you to have a go at creating a poster warning of the dangers of SPAM. You can use whatever program you are comfortable using to create it. Word or Publisher may be the best options.

The best posters will be used in all the IKCs to warn users of the dangers of SPAM. The posters will also be posted to the Blog and the IKC Facebook Page!

Below are 3 common examples of SPAM which should help you get some ideas!

Hello Everyone,

Maybe some of you don't know me but my name is Mabelene Gebadi, I am new in this position since November 2010, I was appointed as a fulltime IKC Coordinator.

Before joining this taskforce, I was employed as an Administration Officer by Nai Beguta Agama Aboriginal Corporation which is a womans organisation in New Mapoon for 11yrs.

I decided that it was time for me to come back and service my own litttle community of Seisia, as my cousin, late Edna Mills (nee Gebadi) who was the last Coordinator here before me.

This position has just recently been advertised out in october 2010, and I thought about applying to carry on and collect and utilise the resources that we have here for our people.

I also want to thank the State Library in Cairns to take me on board the last workshop which took place in Cairns September last year, because it has been a great help to me, as well as Tara coming in to do the Books Exchange which made me understand alot more and helping me to do Blogs.

Seisia School Attendance March and IKC opening for extra 2hrs for public to see new books

Hello Everyone,

Last Friday 18th February, we had an attendance march organised by our local education council called "Ngurpai Ikama Ikya " which means Education Good Talk. The whole purpose of this march was to encourage families to make every day school attendance of their children counts, to a better learning. There were approx 75-80 people participated which included our local community members, teachers, Army, SES, Ambulance and Fire Brigades gathered at our local supermarket at 3.30pm and started the march into and around the community. It all ended here at the Rural Transaction Centre with a little speach from the chairman of the Education Council, Councillor Jeffrey Aniba, who is also our community Councillor. After the speech was followed by a Sausage Sizzle. The IKC was open for extra 2hrs to the public to check out our new books from the exchange.

ILS Update: Aurukun IKC Book Exchange

This week’s blog update is from the small community of Aurukun located 100klms south of Weipa. The Aurukun IKC Coordinator, Jason Nuku and I worked together to undertake a book exchange and tidy up of the library space. We removed all the old donated books from the collections, cleaned up the shelves and library area and placed the new books on the shelves in Dewey decimal and alphabetical order. We also visited the school principal and met with some of the service providers in the community. It was a very positive week overall and it was nice to get to know some of the Aurukun community members.

On Tuesday we did the book exchange for our New Mapoon IKC with the help of Mabelene from Seisia IKC and Tara from Cairns. We got lots of new lovely books for our IKC, which is very exciting for our community. We cleaned up the kids area and rearranged it. We unpacked all the books and have 15 boxes of books to send back to Cannon Hill. It's good to have everything in order and looking good. It's been great working with Mabelene from Seisia. We got lots done and have made signs to let our community know there are new books and we are meeting with the Council today to tell them about our big week and our ideas for improving the IKC for our communities. It's been a great week!

My name is Aaron Matthews and I am a descendant of the Woolinja (East Kimberley) and Gurindji (Wave Hill) people. I was raised on Doon Doon Station which is an Aboriginal Community located 100klms from Kununurra, Western Australia.

Recently I started working at Indigenous Library Services (ILS) in Cairns as a Project Officer. My role at ILS is to provide support and development to the Indigenous Knowledge Centre’s (IKC’s) in the following communities: Kubin, Erub, Worribinda, Poruma, Aurukun, Boigu and Palm Island.

Prior to working at ILS I was employed at the Centre for Aboriginal Studies, Curtin University as Team Leader of first year Indigenous Community Management and Development Program (ICMDP). My role was primarily to teach and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying towards their degree.

I am very passionate about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social justice and I believe that education is a vital tool to addressing some of the injustices our people face today. It is my belief that the IKC’s can play a vital role in bringing our communities together to learn, share and grow and that’s why I’m really excited to be working with you all this year.

Book Exchange 2011

I am honored to share with you all that our community of Boigu island had it's first book exchange from the 31st January - 4th February 2011, happening at our local Indigenous knowledge centre (IKC) with the help from our newly field officer from Cairns Mr Aaron Matthew.

I was very excited and looking for this event as this was another learning step to take on. The work was challenging exspecially in taking out the books and trying to out them back in the right category, but most of all it was great fun. Aaron was a great help without him i wouldn't have done it on my own so thank you again and also to the local men & women of Boigu island community.

To finish off my post, I like to say that the book exchange has now made a huge difference in the lives of young people and adults. I now have a lot of them coming in not only to relax but more importantly to have a read of our new collection.

'SORRY' The 3rd Anniversary

Hi everybody. Well, can you believe it will be three years this Sunday since former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised to Indigenous Australians for the Stolen Generation!! Reconciliation Australia has released a fact sheet that some of you may find interesting. Although it may look a little long winded, it contains some important information for your own info, or to help in explaining the situation to others who may be interested.

13 February 2011 marks the third anniversary of the Apology to the Stolen Generations. Why was the apology important? Have there been compensation claims and what is the Government doing to assist members of the Stolen Generations? Here are some straightforward answers to these questions and more.

1. Who are the Stolen Generations?
The term „Stolen Generations‟ refers to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians who were forcibly removed, as children, from their families and communities by government, welfare or church authorities and placed into institutional care or with non-Indigenous foster families. The forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children began as early as the mid 1800s and continued until 1970.
Many of these removals occurred as the result of official laws and policies aimed at assimilating the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population into the wider community.
The 1997 Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families, conducted by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, found that between 1 in 10 and 3 in 10 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were forcibly removed from their families and communities in the years 1910 to 1970.
The Western Australian and Queensland Governments have confirmed that during that period of time all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in their States were affected by the forced removal of children. It is not possible to know precisely how many children were taken because government records of these removals are poor and many government files are inaccurate. Much of what is known about these policies and their effects comes from the personal testimonies of those involved.
The Stolen Generations should not be confused with other government policies that aimed to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in remote areas attend school, with their parents‟ full consent. It should also not be confused with the removal of Indigenous and non-Indigenous children from dangerous circumstances under welfare policies that continue to apply today.
It‟s important to understand that the term "Stolen Generations" refers to those children who were removed on the basis of their race alone. In contrast to the removal of non-Indigenous children, proof of neglect was not always required to remove Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. That one of their parents was of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent was enough.

2. How do we know their stories are true?
All State and Territory governments have acknowledged past practices and policies of forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children on the basis of race. As part of this formal acknowledgement, all State and Territory governments have apologised for the trauma these policies have caused.
The report of the Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families, the Bringing Them Home report, contains extensive evidence of past practices and policies which resulted in the removal of children. It also details the conditions into which many of the children were placed and discusses the devastating impact this has had on individuals, their families and the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
The Inquiry took evidence from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, government and church representatives, former mission staff, foster and adoptive parents, doctors and health professionals, academics, police and others. It received over 777 submissions, including 535 from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and organisations, 49 from church organisations and 7 from governments.

3. Why was it important to apologise to the Stolen Generations?
The Bringing Them Home report found that the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities has had life-long and profoundly disabling consequences for those taken, and has negatively affected the entire Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. For many of the children, removal meant that they lost all connection to family, traditional land, culture and language and were taken to homes and institutions where they were often abused, neglected and unloved.
It never goes away. Just ‘cause we’re not walking around on crutches or with bandages or plasters on our legs and arms, doesn’t mean we’re not hurting. Just ’cause you can’t see it doesn’t mean… I suspect I’ll carry these sorts of wounds ’tilI the day I die. I’d just like it to be not quite as intense, that’s all. (Confidential Evidence 580, Queensland. Bringing Them Home Report.)
The reality of Australia‟s Stolen Generations is not a thing of the distant past. Children were being inappropriately removed from their families by Australian authorities until 1970. Many people affected by the tragedy of the Stolen Generations are still alive today and live with its effects.
The Bringing Them Home report suggested that the first step in healing is the acknowledgment of truth and the delivery of an apology. The release of the report was followed by a wave of apologies to the Stolen Generations by state parliaments, judges, churches, civic associations, trade unions and ethnic groups. However, it remained the responsibility of the Australian Government, on behalf of previous Australian Governments who administered this wrongful policy, to acknowledge what was done and apologise for it.
This issue is a ‘blank spot’ in the history of Australia. The damage and trauma these policies caused are felt every day by Aboriginal people. They internalise their grief, guilt and confusion, inflicting further pain on themselves and others around them. It is about time the Australian Government openly accepted responsibility for their actions and compensate those affected. (Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter in Buti A, Bringing Them Home the ALSA Way.)

4. Why did Australians of today apologise for something they weren’t responsible for?
Individual Australians did not provide the Apology. The Apology was provided by the Australian Government in recognition of policies of past governments. Similarly, the former Australian Government apologised to Vietnam veterans for the policies of previous governments. No individual Australian was asked to take personal responsibility for actions of past governments.

5. What does the Apology mean to non-Indigenous Australians?
Following on from apologies already made by all State and Territory governments and the churches, an official apology to members of the Stolen Generations by the Australian Government was an important step towards building a respectful new relationship
between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Respectful relationships are essential if we are to solve persistent problems.
In this way, the Apology lays the groundwork for us to work together more effectively towards achieving better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. It was an important starting point in healing the wounds of the past and an historic step forward for our nation that we can be proud of.
The Apology was not an expression of personal responsibility or guilt by individual Australians but it does reflect our Australian values of compassion, justice and a fair go, and allows the victims of bad policy to feel that their pain and suffering has been acknowledged. It‟s important that Australians understand the background to the Apology so they understand why it‟s a step towards reconciliation. It‟s this understanding that will realise the great potential of this historic moment to move our nation forward.
These days I don’t understand why it should be such a big deal to say sorry for the injustices that have been done to Indigenous people. I know some people feel differently but, to me, saying sorry just feels necessary as a first step towards moving forward together. (Daniel Johns, lead singer of Silverchair.)

6. Why should we apologise when many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are actually better off because they were removed from bad circumstances?
It is true that some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were removed from their families on genuine welfare grounds. It is also true that some children who were removed gained access to some advantages (such as increased educational opportunities), but evidence shows that the overwhelming impact of the forced removal policy was damaging.
Some people involved in the removal of children because of their race genuinely believed they were doing the right thing. As we now know, they were not.
The predominant aim of the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families was to absorb or assimilate children with mixed ancestry (who were called „half-castes‟) into the non-Indigenous community. As Brisbane's Telegraph newspaper reported in May 1937: "Mr Neville [the Chief Protector of WA] holds the view that within one hundred years the pure black will be extinct. But the half-caste problem is increasing every year. Therefore their idea is to keep the pure blacks segregated and absorb the half-castes into the white population. Perhaps it will take one hundred years, perhaps longer, but the race is dying."
The Bringing Them Home report found that many children were removed solely on the basis of skin colour. Proof of this is in the fact that in many families children with paler skin were removed while their darker skinned siblings were left with the family.
The suggestion that Stolen Generations children were better off can only be assessed against the evidence of deprivation, neglect and abuse suffered by the children in the homes or institutions they were removed to.
Almost a quarter of witnesses to the Bringing them Home Inquiry who were fostered or adopted reported being physically abused. 1 in 5 reported being sexually abused. 1 in 6 children sent to institutions reported physical abuse and 1 in 10 reported sexual abuse.

7. Has the Apology led to claims for compensation from members of the Stolen Generations?
The Bringing Them Home report recommended the establishment of a national compensation fund for people affected by the forcible removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. The idea of the fund would be to offer reparation to those affected and avoid the courts having to deal with costly individual litigation. The United Nations Human Rights Committee has also recommended the Australian Government adopt a mechanism to compensate victims of the Stolen Generations.The Apology itself did not refer to compensation and the current Government has ruled out offering compensation to members of the Stolen Generations.
There has not been a rush of compensation claims following the Federal Government‟s apology and those of State and Territory governments.
However, the Tasmanian Government set up a compensation fund for members of the Stolen Generations in that State with $5 million in capped payments that was then divided among eligible people and their families. The governments of Queensland and Western Australia established „redress‟ funds to provide monetary and emotional support to people who were abused as children in State care though they were not specifically addressed to members of the Stolen Generations.

8. What has the Government done for members of the Stolen Generations since the Apology?
On 13 February 2009, the first anniversary of the Apology, the Australian Government announced its intention to establish a Healing Foundation to address trauma and aid healing in Indigenous communities, with a particular focus on the Stolen Generations. $26.6 million over four years was allocated in the 2009-2010 Budget to establish the Healing Foundation, which was incorporated in October 2009. Since this time, the Healing Foundation has provided funding and support to various community-driven Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander healing initiatives, and has been working to promote public awareness of healing issues. The Foundation will also conduct education and training initiatives, and engage in research and evaluation to investigate best practice in healing initiatives. "Reconciliation for me is about recognising the past. Acting in the present. And building a better future." (The Hon. Paul Lennon, former Premier of Tasmania.)
Case Study: Canada's ‘Common Experience Fund’
Canada‟s Indigenous population shares some of the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. From the early 1880s, Indigenous Canadian children were removed from their homes on the basis of their race and placed in church-run, government funded residential schools. From 1920 until early 1970 this removal was experienced by practically all Indigenous children. These schools were created to encourage assimilation and to suppress Indigenous culture and language.
The United Church of Canada recently apologised for this "horrendous period of Canadian history" and the Canadian Government also extended a formal apology in the form of an action plan. The action plan included a statement of reconciliation in which the Canadian Government recognised and apologised for "the single most harmful, disgraceful and racist act" in their history.
The apology led to a range of lawsuits and helped Ottawa‟s Government to come to a settlement with First Nation representatives. As a result of the settlement, the Canadian Government provided a $1.9 billion compensation fund for the „common experience‟ of all people who were affected by the removal of Indigenous children. All residential school survivors are entitled to apply for the „common experience payment‟. If the applicant is successful they receive a standard $10,000 in compensation and a further $3,000 for each year they were placed in the school. The Government has also provided an extra $3 billion in compensation to survivors who suffered sexual and physical abuse in the residential schools.

9. Why was the word ‘sorry’ important as part of the Apology?
The word „sorry‟ holds special meaning in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. In many Aboriginal communities, sorry is an adapted English word used to describe the rituals surrounding death (Sorry Business). Sorry, in these contexts, expresses empathy, sympathy and an acknowledgment of loss rather than responsibility.
During the 2007 election campaign, then Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd also recognised the significance of the word sorry: "… simply saying that you‟re sorry is such a powerful symbol. Powerful not because it represents some expiation of guilt. Powerful not because it represents any form of legal requirement. But powerful simply because it restores respect."

10. Does the Apology mean that reconciliation has been achieved?
An apology from the Australian Government to the Stolen Generations is one important step in working together to achieve reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples. It is important because it removes a barrier to us establishing a better relationship as Indigenous and non-Indigenous fellow Australians.
Closing the life expectancy gap involves consistent, long term action by governments and by all Australians, in health, education, housing, employment etc. - as well as in building respectful relationships that generate better outcomes for us all.
Aboriginal academic Marcia Langton suggested that a formal apology would achieve two things: firstly it will aid in the restoration of a sense of dignity and legitimacy to those who have suffered, and secondly it will acknowledge the serious harm done by previous governments to a class of people on the grounds of their race.
"True reconciliation between the Australian nation and its Indigenous peoples is not achievable in the absence of acknowledgment by the nation of the wrongfulness of the past dispossession, oppression and degradation of the Aboriginal peoples." (Sir William Deane, Governor-General of Australia, 1997.)
The Stolen Generations Alliance has said the Apology should be backed up with a national education campaign and a parliamentary inquiry to resolve all outstanding issues, including compensation payments. "The level of dysfunction that remains in the community as a result of the removal policy is way beyond an apology," Alliance co-convener Jim Morrison claims.
Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has also said that "unless the great symbolism of reconciliation is accompanied by an even greater substance, it is little more than a clanging gong".

Cairns Office Closure - Cyclone Yasi

Hi Everyone!

My name is Tara and I'm new to State Library! I am working for Indigenous Library Services from the Cairns office as a Project Officer. I will be providing support and development for the IKC's at New Mapoon, Seisia, Injinoo, Lockhart River, Pormpuraaw and Dauan Island. I'm so excited to be working with all of you amazing IKC coordinators. I have met a few of you before when I attended the IKC coordinators workshop down in Brisbane back in 2007.

I have recently returned to the workforce after having nearly 12 months off for the birth of my first child. I miss him very much but he has lots of fun at home with his dad while I am at work. My little boy's name is Ba'il which is a traditional lanugage name given to us by the Lockhart River Elders. It is the name of the old mission site of Lockhart River. I spent 3 years working in Lockhart River for the Council in Community Development where I mentored the Women's Group, Youth Group, Land & Sea, Wellbeing Centre, Sports & Recreation, HACC and Business Development. I really love working in community and helping community members to achieve empowerment and self determination. I have many great memories from my time up there with all the friends and family I made. I have grown up in Cairns and studied an Honours Degree in Cultural Anthropology at James Cook Uni. My husband and I have now moved back to Cairns to be closer to our family while Ba'il is still small.

I'm really looking forward to visiting your beautiful communities and working closely with you throughout the year. Please feel free to give me a call or write me an email just to say hi or if you need help with anything at all.

The Culture Love Program that was commenced on Hammond Island from the 17th - 21st of January this month went very well!

We were ahead of schedual and everyone had heaps of fun!

Hello everyone, it's been a while since I've posted up a blog. Hehe!

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and New Year break, hope you had loads of fun!

From Next Monday 17th - Friday 21st of January, the Hammond IKC will be holding a Culture Love Program for children ages 8-12. They will be creating a Turtle Mural that will be displayed in or on the outside of the Hammond Island IKC.
I am very excited and looking forward to meeting Rose Warsow and Sara :D.... And the best part is.... I am so looking forward to working with them!

I will up-load pictures of the Program and the Mural when everything is done :)

ABC Indigenous has created a fantastic resource that is free and available to anyone with an internet connection. FOR POSSIBLE INCLUSION IN 2011 QLD VERSION IT’S BED TIME PICTURE BOOK
A COPY OF THE 2010 IT’S BED TIME WILL BE EMAILED TO AUTHORS
INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING MANUSCRIPTS.

The Big Book Club is a not for profit charitable organisation committed to the promotion of reading, literature and Australian authors and illustrators. The Little Big Book Club (LBBC) is for parents of children aged between birth and 5 years.

It’s Bed Time is a resource (picture book) for parents and carers of children aged between birth and 5 years to assist bedtime routines.

The Queensland Government under the Books for Bubs program will distribute for FREE the 2011 It’s Bed Time picture book to every parent of new born baby at the maternity hospital from July 2011.
